R io de Janeiro is one of the world’s mega-cities, with a population of over 14 million in the metropolitan area. However, it is only the second-largest city in Brazil, São Paulo having a population of almost 23 million.

Rio de Janeiro lies on the southeast coast of Brazil (see Figure 1, below), and is famous throughout the world for Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer on top of Mt Corcovado and Sugarloaf Mountain, which you can see on the left-hand side of the above photograph. These sights make Rio one of the most visited cities in the world.
