Have you ever had tried to ‘watch what you eat’ by deliberately making yourself have just a small portion of the food you desire? Maybe it’s just a few crisps from a large bag? Or just a one or two Maltesers in a family-sized box? What sometimes happens (or often happens in my case) is that two crisps or two Maltesers, leads to three and then four, and before you know it, you have polished off the whole packet/box!
I would wager that most of us have experienced a similar situation at least once in our lives. Why do we do this? Thankfully psychological research has come up some answers, one of which is restraint theory.
