Individuals have always been key in the development of empires, both in terms of growth and decline. In medieval times, they were restricted to those with military prowess, but as society has changed, individuals have influenced British empires as propagandists, adventurers, administrators and politicians. Most key individuals in the development of the British empire have demonstrated a mix of skills. Their motivation changed from dynastic ambition in the medieval period to a sense of nationalism based on Britain as an imperial power in later centuries.

In the medieval period military skill was the key determining factor in a king’s ability to maintain power and, as such, was extremely important in the growth and subsequent loss of the Angevin empire. However, the ability to win in battle had to be supported with administrative and political skills.
