The Thames Barrier

Climate change will bring challenges to London and the River Thames including rising sea levels and more frequent storm surges. The likelihood of higher flood levels is putting pressure on flood management strategies, particularly the Thames Barrier.

The Thames Barrier was opened in 1982 to help regulate the river’s flow and protect against tidal flooding. When high tides are forecast, the barrier is raised across the width of the river to temporarily stop water from flowing up the river towards central London.
