Did you know that in 2024 the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere reached a record high of 425 parts per million, which was a significant increase from 2023 and much higher than the scenario outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has stressed the importance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. This means urgent action is needed to reduce CO2 emissions.
One approach is to look at how we manage small-scale ecosystems such as woodlands through afforestation (planting trees) and clear felling. Woodlands are crucial in sequestering (storing) carbon and providing vital ecosystem services, but many are threatened by drought and are at risk from wildfires as our climate becomes warmer and drier in the summer months. Could effective management of woodlands help with the climate emergency?
