At dawn in the Malawian countryside the bleating of goats competes with the sound of children’s laughter. Some chase after the animals while others help to prepare the day’s meals over open fires. The goats are small, sturdy and unassuming, but for many families these goats are more than livestock, they are a lifeline.

Life in Malawi, a landlocked country in southeast Africa, can be extremely challenging particularly for families who depend on subsistence farming. In recent years tropical cyclones, prolonged droughts, and the wider impacts of climate change have all contributed to food insecurity, which affects many families in rural Malawi.
