Changing land use in Britain

Our view of the surface of the planet has been transformed by the range of satellite imagery available on Google Earth. This article considers its value for geographers studying recent changes.

Download the Google Earth app or visit the website earth.google.com/web and select ‘Explore Earth’. It is available on PC, tablet and mobile phone, but the page set-up differs slightly.

In the search bar type in ‘Wellingborough’. This medium-size town in Northamptonshire is on the northern limit of reasonable commuting time to London. A rail line marks its eastern boundary, and the M1 motorway lies some distance to the west. Adjust the zoom level so that the whole town and some surrounding countryside can be seen.
