Water Lane

Exeter’s new flagship development

During your GCSE geography course, you will study urban issues and learn about the challenges around housing in both developed (or high-income) and developing (or low-income) countries. This article looks at housing issues in Exeter, a city in southwest England.

Housing shortages and the location of new housing developments have become hot topics since the 2024 general election. Choosing sites for new housing is often controversial and in Exeter, the public has been involved in a consultation regarding plans for future housing in the city.

As in many parts of the UK, new housing is desperately needed in Exeter because the population of the city increased by 11% between 2011 and 2021. This increase was largely due to in-migration (people moving into the city from other areas). New housing is needed both in the urban fringe and in the inner city.
