London, a city of over 8 million people, produces over 7 million tonnes of waste a year from homes, public buildings and businesses. All this waste needs to go somewhere, so what are the best methods of dealing with this growing mountain of a problem?
Despite the targets to recycle and reuse this waste, inevitably some ends up in landfill sites — these are where waste, including non-hazardous and non-recyclable materials, is disposed of and buried in the ground. It is increasingly difficult to find landfill sites in and around the capital due to the lack of space. Will London be able to hit its 2030 target of ensuring that 65% of all waste will be recycled?
