Social stratification
Discussions of wealth inequality as a possible problem have been somewhat muted in sociology, politics and society more generally – until recently. However, unease over the apparently falling living standards and prospects of much of the UK population has mounted. Meanwhile, as the UK government has struggled to raise sufficient funds from taxation to pay for welfare, benefits, education, health, pensions and defence spending, some MPs, commentators and pressure groups have made the case for a wealth tax, arguing that this is the only way to tackle societal problems.
