Concerns have been expressed recently about a noticeable global decline in birth rate and family size, especially in more-developed societies. This fall means that, as populations age, there will be fewer younger people in the workforce to provide the financial, care and medical support required for the older nation’s upkeep and good health. A global fertility crisis is building.

But what are the sociological roots of the crisis? The UN Population Fund (2025) recently surveyed 14,000 adults – men and women across 14 countries which are home to 37% of the world’s population – on what they want for their reproductive lives and futures, and whether they believe they will be able to realise those ambitions.
