Why gender matters for criminal justice

Sociologists are deeply interested in the causes of crime, but also how we deal with offenders as part of the state regulation of the behaviour of its citizens. The Criminal Justice System (CJS) consists of all the different agencies and organisations that are involved in law, order, crime and punishment, including the police, Crown Prosecution Service, courts, prisons and Probation Service. How we deal with crime depends on how we view the offender and society. The criminologist Tim Newburn (2007) suggests that there are five main reasons for punishing offenders:
