This is an umbrella term given to a broad collection of online content aimed specifically at men and boys. It encompasses a wide range of communities, blogs, podcasts and influencers. It is particularly characterised by its misogynistic and anti-feminist content, but it also overlaps with more benign or sometimes helpful material, such as advice on fatherhood, careers and men’s health.
Much of the content of the manosphere spreads the view that improvements to women’s rights in areas such as education, work and leadership roles have worked to the detriment of men, who are portrayed as victims. Women are often seen as exploiting and manipulating men. Some groups in the manosphere incite not only hostility but also violence towards women, including domestic abuse and rape. Other groups are also linked to extremism and radicalisation. Young men and boys often come across such material while searching for content on dating, gaming, personal grooming or fitness. A recent report by the UN secretary general viewed the manosphere as a major contributor to the spread of violence against women and girls.
