On AQA Paper 2, Part B, you will find ‘Beliefs in society’ questions. There are three essays to write: two 10-mark questions followed by a 20-mark essay. You should aim to spend 30 minutes on this 20-mark question, and it should be written in full prose. Like any long essay in sociology A-level, the command word is ‘evaluate’, which means that there is a debate to explore. This article will explain how to reach your full potential and give you a breakdown of how you might structure the essay, as well as offering top-band tips. Even if you are following a different specification, you will find the information here useful. For similar advice on the two 10-mark questions, see Sociology Review Vol. 35, No. 1.
It is always important to prepare for any exam by revisiting the sociology A-level specification, since all questions will be drawn from there. The wording of the specification therefore gives important clues about the types of debate that might appear in a longer question. Spend time reading the specification, checking you know what is expected of each bullet point and considering past questions so that you can see how the specification has been used in questions.
