■ Sociological theory

Most of the major perspectives in A-level sociology crop up quite regularly in your studies. Functionalists, Marxists, feminists and postmodernists all contribute to analysing areas of social life and you are likely to quickly become familiar with the general thrust of their arguments. Symbolic interactionism is, however, a little different. You are most likely to encounter it in the topics of ‘Crime and deviance’, ‘Education’ and also perhaps if you cover ‘Health and illness’ and ‘Culture and identity’.
