QUESTION AND ANSWER

Answering AQA Method in Context questions

© Monkey Business/stock.adobe.com

Method in Context (MIC) questions appear on Paper 1 as Question 5 and are worth 20 marks. You have roughly 30 minutes to answer this question and should aim to write around 2 to 2.5 pages. MIC questions require you to use your knowledge of research methods and education. Methods ‘in context’ means you will be asked to consider how suitable a particular method is for investigating a particular educational issue. In other words, you will need to think as if you were actually planning to carry out research on an educational topic.

The Item generally contains two things: some ideas about what you might want to research in terms of the educational topic, and also a strength and weakness of the method itself. The Item is very useful, so do make sure that you read and underline any parts that you can apply within your answer. Quite often, you will see a concept described, so you could use this concept in your essay to gain marks.
