Stress and injustice

In her article, Yagmur Amanvermez correctly describes stress in terms of both external stressors and internal stress responses. Yet, when it comes to managing stress, she focuses exclusively on changing stress responses. Of course, from a clinical perspective this can make perfect sense. As a psychologist or psychotherapist, you usually have little or no opportunity to directly modify the stress-inducing environment (external), whereas you do have the tools to help the affected person managetheir stress (internal).

There is evidence, including from Amanvermez et al. (2022), that individual stress management does have a small but statistically significant positive impact. However, what if the stress in the environment is in the form of something like unmanageable workload, discrimination, workplace bullying or domestic abuse? The individual cannot change this.
