Ten top tips for exam success

Exam success is not just about subject knowledge. It is also about developing specific skills that will enable you to complete the paper to the best of your abilities. Here are ten key pieces of advice from an experienced examiner

It is important to be aware of what the Edexcel politics assessment objectives (AOs) require (see Box 1). You do not have to refer to each one in every sentence, and there is some overlap between AO1 and AO2. The essential starting point is AO1: you cannot analyse or evaluate vague or inaccurate subject knowledge. AO2 shows your awareness of differing viewpoints, of similarities and differences and of agreement and disagreement. This will include your contemporary evidence or use of key thinkers. AO3 is probably the trickiest area. Here, you evaluate the strengths of these arguments and reach your judgement, which must be substantiated rather than just stated.

AO1 Knowledge and understanding: be accurate and show breadth and depth.
