Political ideas are categorised into ‘core’ and ‘non-core’ and are examined across two different papers. All questions regarding political ideas will be framed as a debate. You will be expected to review both agreements and disagreements within a political idea and be able to provide a substantiated judgement.
All political ideas questions will use the same command words, specifically asking ‘To what extent’ you might agree or disagree with a given statement. Your response must meet the three assessment objectives (see Box 1). You should incorporate relevant key thinkers and reference the various branches within a political idea to illustrate a breadth of debate. It is also important to use the key terminology that is detailed in the exam specification.
