Priyamvada Natarajan was born in Coimbatore in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu in 1969, and grew up in New Delhi. As a child she was interested in maps of Earth and the sky, and was able to visit the Nehru Planetarium.
Priya moved from India to the USA for her undergraduate education, earning degrees in physics and mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991, and a master’s degree in 1994. She then studied in the UK after being awarded the Isaac Newton Fellowship for graduate studies, receiving her PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1998. She continued to work at Cambridge until 2003, becoming the first woman working in astrophysics to be elected a fellow at Trinity College.
