EXAM TALKBACK

Going up?

‘Deduce’ questions require you to reach a conclusion. It is usually a case of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, but it will take several steps to get there, and you must decide what these are for yourself. Hovan Catchatoor and Nicky Robinson examine how to approach this successfully, and remind you to finish the job – too many students forget to write a conclusion

Physics needs numbers, but until we connect our numbers with the physical world, they are just arithmetic. ‘Deduce’ tasks help us see this clearly. Calculations will be at the heart of the solution, but we must start with data and end by comparing our results with the real situation.

The question discussed in this ‘Exam talkback’ is about what happens when the air temperature inside a balloon increases. The task is simply: ‘Deduce whether the balloon can take off’.
