Simple harmonic motion (SHM) is a staple topic of A-level physics and a great example of where we can use the same mathematics in two different situations – a mathematical analogy as it were.
There are many examples throughout physics where we can use the mathematics of one situation and apply it to something seemingly quite different. For example, after studying gravitational and electric fields, you will see how the underlying mathematics of one is similar to that for the other – compare Newton’s law of gravitation (force between two masses) and Coulomb’s law (for the force between two charges). If we understand the mathematics of one situation, we can apply it directly to another.
