The motion of a single object can be described using Newton’s laws. Orbits are often modelled as if the object being orbited has infinite mass, using the mathematics of circular motion. In a more sophisticated model both objects orbit a common centre of mass. This leads to new insights into angular momentum, and observable effects in astrophysics and atomic physics.
