EXAM TALKBACK

Graphical skills

Some exam questions ask you to apply your practical skills in terms of plotting and analysing a set of data. Hovan Catchatoor and Nicky Robinson examine how you can successfully approach this type of question

Graphical questions based on practical data test your ability to process and interpret data correctly. Once you are familiar with what the examiners are wanting from you as you complete your data analysis and graph plotting, the marks should be easier to gain. The analysis here will help you understand how the mark schemes are applied so you can maximise your marks.

The question discussed in this ‘Exam talkback’ is asking you to discuss how a particular equation relates to how a thermistor responds to changes in temperature. Your job is to link this equation to the equation of a straight line and then to plot and analyse a relevant graph. This question is taken from the June 2022 Edexcel Advanced Physics Paper 3, which covers all aspects of the physics specification, including practical skills. The question is reproduced by kind permission of Pearson Education Ltd (Edexcel). The answers that follow are the responsibility of Physics Review, and Edexcel accepts no responsibility whatsoever for their accuracy or method of working.
