Types of muscle contraction and triphasic training

Introducing the concept of triphasic training, Adam Morton examines concentric, eccentric and isometric muscle contractions, viewing them as trainable aspects of every movement

An understanding of the different muscle contractions is required by all the major exam boards.

When considering types of muscle contraction, a common misconception is to view eccentric, isometric and concentric contractions as distinct functions of skeletal muscle tissue, performed in isolation. Instead, when analysing athletic movements, it is important to be aware of the ‘triphasic nature of muscle action’ (Verkhoshansky and Siff, 2009). As stated by Dietz and Van Dyke (2012), every dynamic movement includes all three contractions: eccentric, isometric and concentric.
