This topic is covered by all the major exam boards in the preparation and training methods section.

Believe it or not, there is an actual science behind how long you should rest in between sets. The optimal time is around the 3-minute mark. If you usually rest for less than 3 minutes and want to get the most out of your resistance training sessions, I would consider extending your rest periods slightly. Bear in mind that this 3-minute figure is based around resistance training, and not other methods of training like continuous training. Rest periods during this form of training would depend entirely on the length of your work periods – it is usually a work-to-rest ratio of 1:1 or 1:0.5.
