Returning to sport after an injury

More than just physical function?

This article covers aspects of sport psychology, injury prevention and strategies for the rehabilitation of injuries.

We have seen it many times: a high-level athlete has a long-term injury and when they return to sport, they get injured again in their first game back, or soon after. The athlete could have passed all the physical tests they needed to pass, have gone back into training and performed well, and have been medically cleared to compete – yet they still got injured again. This has led people to think about the role of psychosocial factors, rather than just physical factors, in returning to sport after an injury.
