Jodie Ounsley began her sporting career as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion before representing the UK in athletics at the Deaflympics – a series of multi-sport events sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee at which deaf elite athletes compete. Ounsley then moved on to rugby, where she was the first deaf female player to be selected for an international Rugby Sevens squad. Jodie also played for the Exeter Chiefs in the Premier 15s.

In 2020, Jodie was awarded the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year award. She was also included in the BBC Woman’s Hour Power List 2023, which recognised 30 outstanding women in sport, and was named the Honorary President of UK Deaf Sport that same year.
