According to a report by Historic England, the heritage sector is currently estimated to contribute £44.9 billion per annum to the UK economy and supports the employment of over 523,000 workers. This is more than double the contribution of the aerospace industry, for example.
The heritage sector covers roles in museums, working with archives, rare book collections, conservation, education, events, archaeology and historic buildings. There are over 2,500 museums, over 4,000 public libraries and 950 academic libraries in the UK, alongside castles, stately homes, gardens and other historic sites, all relying on expert staff with appropriate knowledge and skills.
