The Encyclopedia of Diderot & d’Alembert Collaborative Translation Project (www.tinyurl.com/446ffb3k) is a digital initiative designed to make accessible to teachers, students and English-language readers more generally, translations of articles from the Encyclopédie, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert in the eighteenth century. This project, hosted by the University of Michigan, offers accurate and approachable English translations that bring the original French texts to a broader audience, emphasising educational use. The translations are also intended to help interested readers, including scholars, study and understand Enlightenment thought and its influence on modern society. By making these texts available online, this project encourages deeper engagement with historical material that remains relevant in today’s academic and educational contexts.
The project is a collaborative effort by volunteer translators who are passionate about Enlightenment studies and committed to providing free access to Encyclopédie articles for English readers. The selections available so far reflect the translators’ diverse interests and areas of expertise. While translating all 70,000 articles may be beyond their reach, active translators will continue to add new translations as they are completed. This is therefore a continuous and ongoing project, and it is hoped that many more volunteer contributors will lend their support.
