When Louis and Paula Kissinger’s first child, Heinz, was born on 27 May 1923, the Jewish couple from Fürth in southern Germany can have had little idea what their newborn son would achieve. A decade later, Hitler became chancellor and in 1935 Louis lost his job when the Nuremberg Laws made it illegal for Jews to teach in state schools. The family emigrated to the USA in 1938 — a fortunate escape, as at least 13 close relatives later died in Nazi concentration camps.
