Migrants were drawn to the UK for work
The British Nationality Act of 1948, which became law on 1 January 1949 meant that any citizen in a Commonwealth country was a British subject and so could move to Britain to live and work. Some immigration from Commonwealth countries had already occurred (the Empire Windrush had arrived at Tilbury docks in June 1948 for example), but the Nationality Act of 1948 made it easier.
