This photograph of Woodhead reservoir near Glossop, UK, was taken on the 10 June 2025 after the driest spring for 96 years. Water levels at the reservoir had dropped to an all-time low. This is a striking reminder of how reliant we are on sufficient rainfall and an infrastructure that can ensure enough clean water is delivered to domestic and commercial properties across the country.
Rainfall in the north of England in March and April had not been so low for nearly 70 years. In May, the Environment Agency convened a meeting of key stakeholders in the UK water industry to discuss action plans in the event that a drought were to materialise later in the year.
