On 6 June 2023, a massive breach was reported in the Nova Kakhovka Dam on the Dnipro River, Kherson region, southern Ukraine (see Figure 1). The dam, which was under Russian control following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, experienced a catastrophic failure causing extensive flooding downstream. Eighteen million cubic metres of water were released impacting some 80 villages and towns downstream. The incident had far-reaching humanitarian, environmental and military impacts.
