MAKING THE GRADE NEA IDEAS

Older migrants

In this issue, Elaine Lynn-Ee Ho writes about an often-forgotten element of migration: the movement of older people. This includes people who move to another country to retire and those who are moving to the UK to be with family as they get older. The UK also has a small but growing number of older migrants who are refugees or asylum seekers. See this UK overview from the Centre for Policy on Ageing: www.tinyurl.com/bddhd3yk.

Understanding the complexities of migration by older people in your area is potentially fertile ground for an NEA. The 2021 census contains data on the age and year of arrival of migrants which would allow you to begin to understand migration of older people in your area. The Office for National Statistics provides links to key data sets and reports here: www.tinyurl.com/3pucazyd. There is also an excellent compilation of global data on migration and age curated by the migration data portal of the International Organization for Migration, which is a UN agency based in Geneva (www.tinyurl.com/msyubh7t).
