Coastal realignment projects

Tom Spencer’s article in this issue on coastal wetlands as nature-based solutions elsewhere in this issue describes the important role of saltmarsh systems in mitigating coastal flooding, storing carbon and supporting coastal ecosystems. In the UK, coastal flooding policy is devolved to the four nations. For example, in England the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy is delivered on the coast through 20 shoreline management plans (see www.tinyurl.com/ys8362w8).

These plans identify one of four management strategies for each stretch of coast: Hold the Line, Advance the Line, No Action and Managed Realignment. Managed Realignment often involves the creation of new coastal wetlands and this approach has been adopted at sites across the UK. Over 75 coastal realignment schemes have been implemented over the past 30 years. Marine consultants ABPmer maintain a database of coastal realignment schemes, which is a great resource for finding projects near you: www.tinyurl.com/35pykwk2.
