Living with lava in Iceland

The small fishing village of Grindavik sits on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland. The 3,800 residents were evacuated in November 2023 when heightened seismic activity indicated a build-up of magma and imminent eruptions.

In mid-December, lava began spewing from a 4-kilometrelong fissure of the Sundhnúks volcano which had been dormant for around 800 years. Rockpile barriers were constructed in January 2024 to protect Grindavik’s houses and power plants. This photograph was taken on 30 May 2024.
