The word ‘text’ is the root of linked terms such as ‘context’, ‘subtext’ and ‘intertextuality’. ‘Textile’ is also part of this word family, reminding us not only of the ties that bind the poems, plays and novels we read to the specific milieux in which they were produced, but also to the carefully and logically woven strands that hold plot and narrative together.
