EVALUATING EXPERIMENTS

Relics of the Stone Age

Some concepts in biology are best understood by problem-solving, especially thinking about experiments you might do and how you might interpret data. Here, geneticist Kevin O'Dell needs your help to solve an ancient mystery on an isolated Scottish Island

When you asked your favourite teachers whether they could help you find a summer job in a biology laboratory, you had not imagined that you would end up spending the summer in a small village in the Western Isles of Scotland. Now, having negotiated multiple issues, including last minute cancellations of ferries, you have finally arrived in the picturesque village of Lochmadore, the settlement with the lowest crime rate in the whole of Scotland.

Your teachers gave you very few details about why this small, isolated community was offering a summer job for a young biologist. As a consequence, you are slightly apprehensive about meeting Professor Anne Sesstral. It is her laboratory you will be working in, and you have no real idea what she might be expecting you to do, especially as she is an archaeologist with relatively little expertise in biology.
