In 2013, the Ugly Animal Preservation Society bestowed the unpleasant title of ‘World’s Ugliest Animal’ on a blobfish, with its strange appearance causing it to become an internet sensation. Scientist Richard Arnott commented that the widespread photos of blobfish constituted a ‘vast bullying campaign’.
The ‘ugly’ blob-like appearance of specimens brought to the surface results from tissue damage caused by the sudden depressurisation experienced. Blobfish lack strong bones and are tadpole shaped, with loose, flappy, non-scaly skin. They also have little muscle.
