Roald Dahl’s tale, Fantastic Mr Fox, is about a wily, courageous red fox who fights to survive using his wit and cunning. While the narrative focuses on Mr Fox as the hero, he is also a pest to the human characters in the story.
Many folklore stories focus on the intelligence of foxes, portraying them as deceptive or cunning tricksters. In other tales their ingenuity is used to help those around them, as depicted in German fairy tales. Foxes are heralded as demonic or divine creatures in some cultures, such as parts of China, Korea and Japan, but are often seen as a nuisance to farmers in Europe, including those in the UK.
