Examination boards are there to help

Students look for help from many sources. However, few look to see what help is available from the examination board whose specification they are studying. Former chief examiner Martin Rowland reviews the extent and nature of the help that examination boards freely offer

Each September, approximately 100,000 students begin to study a new Level 5 biology course in the UK. These courses include the GCE in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, the Higher and Advanced Higher in Scotland, the International Baccalaureate and BTEC.

Many of these students have enrolled in a college, where none of the lecturers are familiar to them. Even in Year 12 of a school, many students will be taught by a teacher they have not met before. For some, this ‘newness’ can be daunting. It becomes important to find your feet quickly – but how?
