Cell division is the fundamental process crucial for growth, repair and reproduction. Each species has a characteristic number of chromosomes, with humans, for example, having 23 pairs – 46 chromosomes – in total.
Following replication, the chromosomes are condensed and sorted, ensuring that division of a parent cell will result in daughter cells that contain exactly the right number of chromosomes.
